Music producer
Music producer skills/abilities
As a music producer, you must be able to have the big picture when it comes to recording and producing music. It is also a really good idea to be skilled in the technical aspects behind recording music, but in some cases you may find that a producer works together with a technician, so that the producer can focus on the music.
The Music Producer's Education and Studies
You in no way need to have an education behind you when you are a producer, but it will often be an advantage to have some skills within either the technical or an instrument. And here, an education from, for example, the conservatory can be a path you can take. At Studio Aftenland, Mikkel Mikkelsen is the permanent producer and technician. He is trained as a drummer from the Jutland Conservatory of Music and has many years of experience with recording and therefore has extensive knowledge of all the technical aspects behind music production.
Instruments and Vocals in Music Production
When producing music, the most important task is to make a coherent recording of all the elements that create the production of a song. Here you work with a rhythmic element, a harmonic element and a melodic element. And in addition, it is ensured that the different frequency ranges (bass, midrange and treble) are balanced. There must be a connection between all these parameters when making a music production. This coherence is obtained by utilizing the various instruments, in relation to which roles they can fulfill and ensuring that they do not come into conflict with the vocals.
Music Production Tools and Software
The most important tool for a producer is the artist that is in the studio. Next are the instruments you use. It can be acoustic or digital instruments. In the case of acoustic instruments, the next tool in the chain is the microphone the producer chooses to record the instrument with. It must then go through a pre-amp that amplifies the microphone signal. Finally, it must be converted from electrical current flowing through the cable into something digital that a computer can understand. All elements of this chain are super important. However, the most important thing is always the musician who plays the instrument.
In the old days, people recorded on tape. Today, everything takes place on the computer and there is a lot of software that you as a producer need to know. Most important is the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) that you use. Here, a file is saved for each and every microphone you have recorded. And these files can then be edited afterwards, so that the production ends up sounding "Radio Ready". At Studio Aftenland, we are experts in all parts of this entire process.
Artistic Expression
The absolutely most important thing to make a good music production is to be aware of the artistic expression. The process of producing a song will automatically be an interplay between the artistic expression of the songwriter and the producer. Precisely for this reason, it can be a really good idea to hire a producer who can come up with new inputs for what you are doing. A large part of a producer's work is to be the artistic sparring partner. It can be very confusing to both have to write songs and at the same time also have to have an overview of how these songs can best go from being good songs to being good recordings of songs. At Studio Aftenland, we are used to working with songwriters and bands, so you can feel completely at ease letting us take care of your production.
